About Asia

Asia is far and away the largest and most populous continent on earth. It covers a total area of 44,579,000 square kilometers. According to various estimates, the population of Asia is somewhere between 3.8 billion to 4.2 billion people. The continent occupies the majority of the Eurasia landmass. The Ural Mountains in Russia forms the border separating Asia from Europe, along with the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the south of Asia spreads the Indian Ocean while on the east side is the Pacific Ocean.

There is no consistent definition of the physical geography of Asia, especially for the countries along its borders. Russia is generally regarded as having one portion in Europe and the rest in Asia. Turkey is some times regarded as being in Asia, in Europe, or part of both, according to differing interpretations. In a similar sense, the islands of the Pacific Ocean are often grouped under Asia, while at other times, they are defined as Oceania and Australasia. Along this line of interpretation, the majority of Indonesia is in Asia while the Indonesia provinces of Papua and West Papua, on the island of New Guinea, are part of Oceania. On the other hand, the countries of the Far East are often grouped with Australia and New Zealand as part of the Asia Pacific region.

According to my own definition, the countries and territories in Asia include the following:
  1. Afghanistan
  2. Andaman Islands
  3. Azerbaijan
  4. Bahrain
  5. Bangladesh
  6. Bhutan
  7. Brunei
  8. Cambodia
  9. China
  10. Christmas Island
  11. East Timor
  12. Guam
  13. Hong Kong
  14. India
  15. Indonesia
  16. Iran
  17. Iraq
  18. Israel
  19. Japan
  20. Jordan
  21. Kazakhstan
  22. Kuwait
  23. Kyrgyzstan
  24. Laos
  25. Lebanon
  26. Macau
  27. Malaysia
  28. Maldives
  29. Mauritius
  30. Mongolia
  31. Myanmar
  32. Nepal
  33. North Korea
  34. Oman
  35. Pakistan
  36. Papua New Guinea
  37. Philippines

China and India are the two most populous countries in Asia. In terms of nominal GDP, Japan is said to have the largest economy in Asia, although in terms by purchasing power parity, China is said to have a larger economy. The three smallest countries in Asia are Maldives (300 sq km), Bahrain (665 sq km) and Singapore (704 sq km). Hong Kong (1,092 sq km) and Macau (25 sq km) are Special Administrative Regions of China, and are not taken in account as separate countries. Singapore, with 6546 person per square kilometer, is the most densely populated country in Asia, not counting Hong Kong (6417 per sq km) and Macau (18,473 per sq km). China shares a border with more countries than any other.

Through AsiaExplorers, I'll try to represent Asia as best as I can, and I hope my personal observations and narrations will offer you wonderful glimpses of this enchanting continent. Should you be planning to travel Asia, I wish you nothing less than memorable experiences.

About the Author

My name is Tim. I write, travel, photograph, research, interview, compile, and put everything I learn into websites. AsiaExplorers is one of the four travel websites that I write. The other three are EarthDocumentary, Penang Travel Tips and World Greatest Sites. They are a reflection of my passions, allowing me to share my travels, my experiences and my knowledge. Every website is at varying degrees of completion - I only wish I have more time to write them, but I am often too busy with my travel business to put more time into writing. Still, like the grass in the field, they grow over time inch by inch. I am warmed by the many emails I have received from people around the world, telling me how much they've enjoyed my sites - you give me the impetus to write and write some more. These websites form a body of information that reflects my own hobbies, passions and interests, and I cover topics ranging from travel to photography to even gardening. Please pay a visit to my websites. I hope you will enjoy browsing them as much as I enjoy creating them.
