More about Afghanistan
Afghanistan has a population of 28.4 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Kabul. In 2009, its nominal GDP was $14.5 billion, its per capita GDP (nominal) was $501 and its per capital GDP, adjusted to purchasing power parity, was $1,000.
Afghanistan is perhaps well known throughout the world for being in a state of continuous war and social upheaval since the late 1970's. It was occupied by the Soviets in the 1979 invasion, which resulted in the Pakistan-supported resistance by the Taliban in the late 1990's. The October 2001 US-led invasion overthrew the Taliban government. The country is now slowly rebuilding itself, although still having to deal with constant insurgencies by the Taliban.

Visiting Afghanistan
Travel to Afghanistan remains extremely dangerous, and casual visitors are warned not to make non-essential trips to the country. Large parts of the country are still not within the full control of the central Afghan government. Threats to personal safety remains very high. Those intending to visit Afghanistan should keep abreast with the latest development in the country before and while they are there.
Most visitors to Afghanistan need a visa. Visit the Afghanistan Foreign Ministry webpage for details.
