Cox's Bazar is a fishing port and tourist destination on the eastern part of Bangladesh. It is located about 150 km to the south of Chittagong. It was named Cox's Bazar during the British rule, after the East India Company officer Hiram Cox, who was the superintendent of the area. The local name for Cox's Bazar is is called Panowa. In the old days, it was also known as Palongkee.

Cox's Bazar is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Bangladesh. It's call to fame is derived from its sandy beach. Cox's Bazar has the longer stretch of sandy beach in the world. The beach is 120 km in length. It has drawn locals as well as a steady stream of intrepid travelers to its hotels and guest houses.

Due to its proximity to Myanmar, Cox's Bazar has a substantial population of Theravada Buddhists, numbering some 400,000. As a result, it also has a good number of Buddhist temples and monasteries.

How to go to Cox's Bazar

You can fly to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka and Chittagong. Among the airlines flying that route are GMG Airlines and United Airways. The high season for visiting Cox's Bazar is from October to April. You can also reach Cox's Bazar by bus from Chittagong. The journey will take you four hours.

Exploring Cox's Bazar

The best way to explore Cox's Bazar is to hire a cycle-rickshaw. Always negotiate before hopping on board. The price that they charge locals is about Tk 12, but as a foreigner, you will have to bargain hard to get the price. Expect to pay Tk 15 or Tk 20 per ride.

Places of Interest in Cox's Bazar

  1. Aggmeda Khyang
    A large Buddhist monastery in Cox's Bazar.

  2. Chittagong Hill Tracts
    A hilly region of Bangladesh that is predominantly Buddhist, neighbouring to Myanmar, and home to several hill tribes.

  3. Dulhazra Safari Park
    Animal sanctuary for the local wildlife that includes wild elephants, Bengal tigers, crocodiles and different types of monkeys and birds.

  4. Himchari
    A scenic spot famous for its "broken hills".

  5. Inani Beach
    One of the most beautiful beaches in Cox's Bazar.

  6. Maheskhali
    Island off Cox's Bazar. There is a Shiva temple and Buddhist pagoda on the island.
  7. Ramu
    A village about 10 km from Cox's Bazar that is famous for its handicrafts and homemade cigars.
