Jakar is a small town in Bhutan. Located at a height of 2,800 meters above sea level, it is the main town in the Bumthang district in central eastern Bhutan, about 11 hours from Thimphu, the capital. This town of just 5,000 people is the center of Vajrayana Buddhism, as reflected in its many monasteries and sites.

Climate of Jakar

The best time to visit Jakar is between May and end of September, after which it gets too cold, with temperatures falling to -6°C in winter.

How to get there

There are buses from Thimphu. It takes 11 hours to reach Jakar. In Jakar itself, you can hire a taxi to take you around.

Places of Interest in Jakar

  1. Chakhar Lhakhang
    A small, unassuming monastery marking the location of the former palace of Sindhu Raja, the Indian monarch who invited Guru Rimpoche to Bhutan.

  2. Jakar Dzong
    Monastic fortress built in 1667.

  3. Jambey Lhakhang
    One of the 108 monasteries which were miraculously constructed by King Songten Gampo in one night.

  4. Kurje Lhakhang
    One of the most sacred monasteries in Bhutan.

  5. Lhodrak Kharchhu Lhakhang
    One of the newer monasteries of Jakar, located above the town.

  6. Tamshing Gompa
    Monastery with a history going back to 1501.

  7. Wangdicholing Palace
    Principal summer palace of the first and second kings of Bhutan, built in 1857.

  8. Zangtopelri Lhakang
    One of the newest monasteries, consecrated in 2008.
