Paro is one of the tourist destinations in Bhutan. It is in fact the gateway to the country, as the airport for Bhutan is located here rather than at the capital, Thimphu, some 54 km away.

The city of Paro is dominated by the Rinpung Dzong, a monastery overlooking the Paro Valley. This imposing building is one of the many sights in the picturesque city.

Arriving in Paro

Foreign visitors to Bhutan will arrive at Paro Airport (PBH). As all visitors will need to engage a local tour operator, your transfer between the airport and hotel will very likely to have been taken care of. Among the airlines flying to Paro includes Drunk Air, the national flag carrier of Bhutan, which flies to Bangkok, Delhi, Dhaka, Kathmandu and Kolkata. In addition, Buddha Air also has a service to Paro from Kathmandu.

Getting around Paro

Apart from the sights already within your itinerary, you can explore Paro by taking a taxi, which is available inside the main bazaar in the heart of town.

Places of Interest in Paro

  1. Drakhapo
    Monastic complex where Guru Rinpoche spent two months.

  2. Drukgyel Dzong
    Monastic fortress built to commemorate a victory against invading Tibetan forces.

  3. Jangsarbu Lhakhang
    Temple housing a magnificent statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha.

  4. Kichu Lhakang
    One of the 108 monasteries which legend says were miraculously built by King Songten Gampo in just one night.

  5. National Museum of Bhutan
    Museum located within a historical watch tower displaying Bhutanese artifacts.

  6. Rinpung Dzong
    One of the most important monastic fortresses in Bhutan.

  7. Taktsang Monastery
    Monastery of the Tiger's Nest, one of the most impressive sights in Bhutan, the monastery is perched on a 1,200-meter cliff.
