To distinguish between the town and the district, the town is often called Pekan Belait, or Belait Village. The name "Kuala" means the estuary of a river, or the confluence of two rivers. The town of Kuala Belait is located at the mouth of the Belait River.

Until the turn of the 20th century, Kuala Belait was nothing more than a fishing village. Historically, the administrative centre of the district was at Kuala Balai, which is further up the Belait River. However, when petroleum was discovered in Padang Berawa (now called Seria), a new administrative centre was built at the mouth of the Belait River to ease communication.

Getting Around

If you do not have your own transport, the best way is to take a taxi. The taxi stand is at the north end of Jalan Pretty, the main road, facing the local HSBC Building. Taxi fares start at B$3.00. The bus stop is across from the taxi stand.
