Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque was built in 1958 by its namesake, the 28th ruler of Brunei and father of the present sultan. Its minaret stands at 44 meter is the tallest structure in Bandar Seri Begawan, and presently no other structure in the city is allowed to exceed it in height.

The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque appears to be floating in its own man-made lagoon beside the Kedayan River. The interior of the mosque is simple and tastefully finished, using fine Italian marble, Arabian carpets, English stained-glass windows, and 3.5 million pieces of Venetian mosaic on the main dome. Outside, there is a stone vessal, a replica of a 16th century royal barge.
