The Victory Gopura is probably the second most used gateway into Angkor Thom after the South Gopura. Visitors leaving Angkor Thom through this gopura will be able to visit a number of significant ruins, among them Ta Prohm, Ta Keo and Banteay Kdei.
Victory Gopura of Angkor Thom
A view of the Victory Gopura at Angkor Thom Victory Gate.
Like the other gateways into Angkor Thom, a road runs through the Victory Gate.
Viewing from the side, you can see the three-headed elephant called Erawan in Thai or Airavata in Khmer plucking lotus flowers. Look closely and you can see a figure sitting on the elephant. That is the Hindu deity Indra.
How to go to Angkor Thom Victory Gate
Angkor Thom Victory Gate is accessible from either side. The first is from Angkor Thom itself. Most visitors are likely to arrive at the Victory Gate from this direction, as they have earlier visited the South Gopura, Bayon and the Royal Palace, in such succession. On the other hand, you can also reach it from the road often called the Small Circuit. That is to say, from the direction of Srah Srang, Banteay Kdei, Ta Prohm, Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda. Decide for yourself how thoroughly you wish to explore Angkor and plan accordingly. If you have seen the South Gate, then I must say that the Victory Gate looks pretty much similar, so decide whether it is worthwhile to stop here. The best way to explore is by tuk tuk, which you can hire from Siem Reap town. Contact my tuk tuk driver Mr Han to see if he is available to take you.
