The South Gopura of Angkor Wat is probably the first sight of Angkor that most visitors get to see. And yet it is one which they are unlikely to step foot on. The South Gopura of Angkor Wat is visible across the moat as you come from the direction of Siem Reap. Upon seeing the South Gopura (or gateway), most visitors circumnavigate the moat by turning left to approach the main entrance.
To reach the South Gopura, the most straightforward way to to walk towards it from the south side of Angkor Wat. You should be able to reach it within 10 minutes. There is not much to see here. The gopura is usually devoid of visitors - only hardcore Angkor enthusiasts venture this far. You can look across the moat from here at the main road where tourist buses ply.
