Vihear Prampil Loveng Explorer Guide

Vihear Prampil Loveng is a Buddhist terrace to the east of the Royal Palace compound of Angkor Thom. It is located east of South Khleang.

The Buddha image installed at Vihear Prampil Loveng originated inside the Bayon temple. It was built by Jayavarman VII when Bayon was a Buddhist temple. However when Jayavarman VIII took over, he turned Bayon into a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The statue of the Buddha was cast out.

In 1933, it was discovered at the bottom of the central well of Bayon. It had broken into pieces, but amazingly, the restorers recovered all the pieces, allowing the statue to be put together. The Buddha statue was then installed in 1935 at Vihear Prampil Loveng, the terrace to the south of the road that runs between the Royal Palace and the Victory Gopura. It is also to the east of South Khleang, and is separated from it by a big man-made pool.
