Chongqing (重庆), also written Chungking, is provincial-level municipality (similar to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin) in central-western China. The city of Chongqing has a population of 5 million people while the municipality a population of 31 million.

The city of Chongqing is located on a tongue of land between the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. Hence it was an important port for river navigation. Due to its geographical location surrounded by tall hills, Chongqing suffers from stifling summers with hazy skies made worse by pollution.

By plane
The Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) receives flights from Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Lhasa, Urumqi, Xi'an, Nanjing, Hangzhou, among others. It also gets international flights from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo.
From the airport, take the Airport Bus to reach the city. Buses leave the airport every half an hour between 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.
By train
You can also take a train from Beijing to Chongqing. The journey takes 25 hours.
The T88xx Express Train connects Chongqing with Chengdu. The journey takes 2 hours 30 minutes.

History of Chongqing
The history of Chongqing goes back to the semi-mythical State of Ba in the eleventh century BC. The state was conquered by the Qin empire in 316 BC. The Qin emperor ordered the construction of a city called Jiang and Chu Prefecture. It was subsequently renamed Yu Prefecture in AD 581, and then Gong Prefecture. It was first known as Chongqing in 1189.

This is Chongqing's wharf district, right to the tip of the Chongqing peninsula.

- Ciqi Kou
Ciqi Kou is an ancient village famous for producing porcelain.

A huge hall seating 4,200 people built to commemorate Chongqing's position in wartime.

A group of white-washed buildings used as the base of the Nationalist-Communist "United Front" government.
