Hebei Province was formed in 1928. Its name means "north of the Yellow (River)". Hebei is also known as Yanzhao, after the state of Yan and the state of Zhao which existed during the Warring States Period of Chinese history, from 475 BC to 221 BC. The province surrounds the cities of Beijing and Tianjin. It borders Liaoning Province to the north east, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north, Shanxi Province to the west, Henan Province to the south and Shandong Province to the southeast. It faces the Bohai Sea to the east.

Hebei is divided into 11 prefectural-level cities. These are subdivided into 172 county-level divisions (22 county-level cities, 108 counties, 6 autonomous counties and 36 districts) and 2207 townships.
