Huangpu River is a 97-km-long river that flows through Shanghai. It has an average depth of 9 meters and a width of 400 meters. The name Huangpu means "yellow bank", in reference to the muddy color of the water.
Shanghai draws most of its drinking water from the Huangpu River. The river divides Shanghai into two parts, Pudong on the west side of the river (the name Pudong actually means "Eastern Bank (of the Huangpu)") and Puxi (west bank of Huangpu) on the western bank.
The Bund in Shanghai is on the west bank of the Huangpu River. Suzhou Creek, also called Wusong River, is the main tributary of the Huangpu. It was named after Suzhou before Shanghai became preeminent.
