Inner Mongolia (内蒙古自治区) is an autonomous region of China. It is located on the northern part of the country. It shares an international border with Mongolia and Russia to the north, and state borders with Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, Hebei Province, Shanxi Province, Shaanxi Province, Ningxia Autonomous Region and Gansu Province.

Inner Mongolia covers 1,183,000 sq km (457,000 sq mi). It is the 3rd largest region in China. However, it only has a population of about 24 million people, putting it in 23rd position in terms of population. Inner Mongolia had a GDP of CNY 972.6 billion in 2009 (15th) and a per capita GDP of CNY 37,287, the 7th highest in the country.
Covering a wide expanse from northeastern China to northwestern China, Inner Mongolia is characterized by a cold arid climate. It experiences cold, dry winters and a summers which can be very warm. The region is divided into prefectural regions called leagues - it has three leagues and nine prefecture-level cities. The capital of Inner Mongolia is Hohhot while the largest city is Baotou.
