About Jing'an Temple

Jing'an Temple, or Temple of Tranquility, also written as Jing'ansi, is one of the most important temples in Shanghai, China. It is located in Nanjing West Road, in its namesake Jing'an District, across from Jing'an Park.

Jing'an Temple traces its history to the Three Kingdoms period, when the temple was built in AD 247 at Suzhou Creek, the river that pass through Shanghai. The temple was relocated to its present site in 1216.

The present structures of Jing'an Temple dates back to the 1880's. The temple complex comprises three main halls, namely the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Hall of the Three Saints, and the Hall of the Virtuous Works.

Jing'an Temple suffered considerably during the Cultural Revolution, when it was forced to close. It was only opened in the recent decades when freedom of worship is relaxed, and once again it has become one of the busiest Buddhist temples in Shanghai.
