The Dutch Pavilion at Expo 2010

The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2010 carries the theme of Happy Street. The plan shows a figure eight, a number considered auspicious by the Chinese. The "Eight" is formed by the pedestrian pathway that leads to 26 model houses along the way.

With the open pavilion concept, the Dutch want to create a happy atmosphere. Within each small house is a distinct mini pavilion celebrating the Dutch innovative use of space, energy and water. The pavilion intends to project the Netherlands as a nation at the forefront of sustainability, environmentally sensitive and urbane.

There are no specific entrance to the Eight street. This allows visitors to wander off anywhere they like. All along the street are some fifty parasols that can be opened when the sun is up. They are coated with a high-tech material that absorbs solar energy.
