About Old Bank of China Building
The old Bank of China Building is a 18-storey office building located at No. 23 on the Bund in Shanghai, China.
The designing of the old Bank of China building started in the early 1930's. It was originally planned to be 34 storeys tall, and would have been the tallest building in the Far East. However, the plan met with objection from Sir Victor Sassoon, who succeeded in preventing any building to be taller than his own. Eventually the building height was reduced to 18.
Foundation of the old Bank of China Building was laid in 1936, but completion was delayed by the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan. The completed structure is just one foot lower than the nearby Sasson House. The bank was only able to occupy the building in 1946, ten years from the time it began construction.
How to reach the old Bank of China Building
If you rely on the subway, you have to walk a bit to reach the Bund. Take the east-west Line 2 to the Nanjing East Road subway station. From there, walk eastwards along Nanjing East Road until you reach Zhongshan Dong Lu, the main thoroughfare on the Bund. Turn left and walk north past the north tower of the Peace Hotel, and you will see the old Bank of China Building next to it, on your left.
