About The Peace Hotel
The Peace Hotel is a landmark on the Bund in Shanghai, China. At time of writing (March 2010), the Peace Hotel is undergoing restoration, with planned reopening as the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in the later part of 2010.
The Peace Hotel actually comprises two buildings, separated by Nanjing East Road. The north building is the former Sassoon House, which used to house the former Cathay Hotel. The south building used to house the Palace Hotel.
Sassoon House was built in 1929 by Sir Victor Sassoon, who made Shanghai his home. It is 77 meters tall. Victor Sassoon succeeded in pertitioning the Municipal Council of the British Concession in Shanghai to prevent the old Bank of China Building next to his from being taller than Sassoon House. The building housed offices for Victor Sasson while the Cathay Hotel occupied the fifth to the seventh floor. It was the most prestigious hotel in Shanghai in the 1940's. Today there is still an old world atmosphere at this building.
The former Palace Hotel was built in 1906. At only six storeys tall, it was already the tallest building along Nanjing Road at that time. The Palace Hotel was also one of the best hotels in Shanghai, and among the guests included Sun Yat-sen.
How to reach the Peace Hotel
The Line 2 of Shanghai's subway to the Nanjing Road East subway station. Walk east along Nanjing Road East until you reach the Peace Hotel, on both sides of the road fronting the Bund.
