About Pudong

Pudong is a district in Shanghai. It (literally "East Pu") got its name because it is located on the opposite side of the Huangpu river from Puxi (literally "West Pu") neighborhood. The "Pu" in the name refers to the Huangpu river. In 2009, it absorbed Nanhui District to become the largest of the districts of Shanghai.

Development of the Pudong began in 1990, when the Chinese government earmarked the area for a development zone. Today Pudong has been transformed from a backwater into China's financial and commercial hub.

All the tallest skyscrapers in Shanghai are located in Pudong, among them Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, Oriental Pearl Tower, and the soon to be completed Shanghai Tower.

Today Pudong has a population of 1.5 million people within an area of 522.8 square kilometers. With the merger with Nanhui District, Pudong has a gross domestic product of RMB370 billion (US$53.98 billion). Its per capita GDP stands at US$16,938.
