Shandong Province is a coastal province of the People's Republic of China. The province covers 156,000 sq km (60,500 sq mi). Out of the 22 provinces of China, Shandong is in the 16th position in terms of size. With a population of 94.1 million people, however, it is the third most populous province in the country. The capital of Shandong Province is the city of Jinan while the largest city is Qingdao.

A major portion of Shandong Province is in the vast North China Plain. The central part of the province is mountainous. The highest peak is called Jade Emperor Peak. It stands at 1545 m. Shandong is also the location of Mount Tai, one of the most revered mountains of Taoism.

Shandong Province borders Hebei Province to the northwest, Henan Province to the southwest, Anhui Province over a tiny section to the south, and Jiangsu Province to the southeast.

The eastern part of Shandong Province extends into the sea, separating Bohai Sea in the northwest from the Yellow Sea to the east and south. The Huang He river flows through the western part of Shandong to enter the sea on Shandong's northern coast.

Shandong has a number of tourist destinations significant to local tourists. The city of Qufu is the birthplace of Confucius while the mountains south of Jinan has many important Buddhist temples.

Shandong Province is divided into 17 prefectures and 140 counties. In addition, Jinan and Qingdao are sub-provincial cities. The prefectures of Shandong include Binzhou, Dezhou, Dongying, Heze, Jining, Laiwu, Liaocheng, Linyi, Rizhao, Tai'an, Weifang, Weihai, Yantai and Zibo.
