About Southeast Corner Watchtower

The Southeast Corner Watchtower (Dongnan Jiao Lou) is a remnant of the long demolished ancient City Walls of Beijing. It is located near the Ancient Observatory. Still imposing after all these years, the Southeast Corner Watchtower now welcomes visitors.

You can walk along the walls of the watchtower and admire its towering bastions with little pot holes for the archers. The walls bear graffiti left over by the international troops that came to liberate the Foreign Legations during the Boxer Rebellion of 1990.

Housed on the 1st and 4th level of the Southeast Corner Watchtower is the Red Gate Gallery, an art gallery founded in 1991 by an Australian in Beijing. It exhibits work by contemporary Chinese and foreign artists. You can check for upcoming exhibits at the gallery's website, www.redgategallery.com.

How to reach the Southeast Corner Watchtower

Take the subway to the Beijing Zhan subway station.
