The UK Pavilion at Expo 2010The UK Pavilion at Expo 2010 features a gigantic orb structure with the theme of "Building on the Past, Shaping Our Future." Called the "Seed Cathedral", the structure which looks like a stylized hedgehog sits on a platform over what looks like a layer of wrapping paper that covers an area of 6,000 square meters. The Seed Cathedral hopes to raise awareness of the Millennium Seed Bank Project launched by the Royal Botanic Gardens in 2000. Visitors get to watch, touch, and get to know seeds from different plants which are embedded in the walls and ceilings of the Seed Cathedral. The "cathedral" itself is created out of 60,000-plus transparent acrylic rods which also contain seeds. These 7.5-meter rods act like fire optic filaments. During the day they draw sunlight into the interior. At night, light sources within the rod cause the whole orb to glow. ![]() UK Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China Author: Suzuki (Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic) ![]() UK Pavilion at night Author: Suzuki (Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic) In addition to the Seed Cathedral, the UK Pavilion also features "green maps" of Belfast, Cardiff, London and Edinburgh. The maps remove all the buildings so that visitors can appreciate only the green places, to really appreciate how green UK cities have become. |
