Kowloon (Traditional Chinese: 九龍, Simplified Chinese: 九龙, map) is the urban area of Hong Kong comprising Kowloon Peninsula and New Kowloon. It is separated from Hong Kong Island by Victoria Harbour.

Kowloon is bordered by Mei Foo Sun Shuen and Stonecutter's Island to the west, Lei Yue Mun Strait to the east, Tate's Cairn and Lion Rock to the north. Located to the south of the mainland part of the New Territories, Kowloon covers 47 sq km (18.1 sq mi) and has a population of slightly over 2 million people.

The name Kowloon means "nine dragons". This refers to the eight peaks surrounding the area, and the ninth "peak" is an honorary title to Emperor Bing (1271-1279)of the Southern Song Dynasty, who died at the age of 8.

Kowloon was taken over by the British in stages. The section south of Boundary Street, along with Stonecutter's Island, was ceded by the Qing Government of Imperial China to the United Kingdom under the Convention of Peking in 1860. The section north of Boundary Street, along with the rest of New Territories, was leased by the british for 99 years in 1898.
