Lan Kwai Fong (蘭桂坊, map) is a popular nightlife and clubbing district in Central, Hong Kong. It comprises D'Aguilar Street and Lan Kwai Fong Lane. Hawkers used to do their business, particularly before the Second World War. The area went into decline after the war, only to undergo a revival in the 1980s, as it morphed into a popular haunt for nightlife.

The revival of Lan Kwai Fong is credited to businessman Allan Zeman who opened his California restaurant there in 1983. The restaurant proved to be such a success that Zeman went on to found the Lan Kwai Group, which redeveloped the area into Hong Kong's foremost entertainment spot.

Lan Kwai Fong becomes extremely (and dangerously) crowded during specific festive occasions such as New Year's Eve.

The worst disaster that took place in a festive celebration at Lan Kwai Fong was the stampede on New Year's Day of 1993 that killed 21 people and injured 48. Since then, stringent crowd control is enforced at Lan Kwai Fong whenever there is a major holiday event.

How to go to Lan Kwai Fong

Take the Island Line or Tsuen Wan Line of the Hong Kong MTR to the Central MTR Station and exit the station at Exit D2. You can also take the Airport Express to the Hong Kong MTR Station and use Exit B2.
