Amritsar (Pubjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ) is a city in Punjab, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Amritsar district. The city has a population of 1.5 million people within the Amritsar district which has 3.7 million inhabitants.
Amritsar is the site of Harmandir Sahib, better known as the Golden Temple of Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural center of Sikhism.

Amritsar was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1574. Through much of its initial history, many of the Sikh leaders were captured and tortured by the Mughals, who attacked and attempted to occupy Amritsar on many occasions.
