Bikaner is a city in the state of Rajastan in India. It was formerly the capital of the principality of Bikaner. Together with Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, Bikaner was one of the three great Desert Kingdoms of Rajastan. The territory forming Bikaner was ruled by the Jat clan which had their own customary law. The Jat chieftains enjoyed a high degree of autonomy from their nominal overload, the Mughal rulers in Delhi.

The city of Bikaner was established in 1472 by Rao Bika, son of Maharaja Rao Jodha, who founded Jodhpur. The city came under the suzerainty of the British Raj in 1818.
Today Bikaner is a city of 724,000 people. Located in the Thar desert, it receives very little rainfall and experiences extremely high temperatures reaching 50°C in summer while in winter temperature may dip to freezing point.
