Chandigarh (चण्डीगढ़, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ) is the state capital of both Punjab and Haryana. And in a uniquely Indian arrangement, it belongs to neither state, but is instead a Union Territory, within what is known as the Chandigarh Capital Region. The region includes the cities of Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur.

Chandigarh stands as the first city in India to be designed from ground up. It was established in 1953, a few year after the partition of British India into the nations of India and Pakistan in 1947. The Government of India under prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru hired French architect Le Corbusier to plan the city.
