Dadra and Nagar Haveli were former Portuguese colonies from the 18th century until 1954. Nagar Haveli was given to the Portuguese by the Maratha Empire as compensation for the sinking of a Portuguese ship in 1783 while Dadra was purchased by the Portuguese in 1785. In 1954, Dadra and Nagar Haveli removed themselves from Portuguese rule. An interim administrative body called Varishta Panchayat of Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli took control from 1954 to 1961, when the territories were merged with India.

The people of Dadra and Nagar Haveli are predominantly Warli, and the Warli language is spoken in the area. They also practise their own customs and tradition. The language has no written form, with words borrowed from Sanskrit, Marathi and Gujarati.
