Staying in Ashrams in India
Ashrams and monasteries all over India offer accommodation to travelers. Generally, the accommodation is spartan, in some all you are provided is a mattress or even a mat. In such a living situation, you will most likely be sharing accommodation with other travelers, and using shared bathrooms.

The ashram is one of the few places where booking is not necessary, as long as there's room, you are welcome. Your stay will often be free, although you should offer a donation in return.
There are some well-established ashrams that do require reservations, as they are quite professionally maintained. Among them include Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Ramakrishna Mission and Sivananda Ashram.
Many of the Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh also maintain hotels close to their premises for the use of visiting travelers. Among them is the Lamayuru Monastery Hotel, regarded as one of the best.
