Tripura is bordered by Bangladesh to the north, south and west, while the states of Assam and Mizoram are located to the east. It was formerly the Kingdom of Tripuri. It became part of India on 15 October 1949 in the Tripura Merger Agreement. Its capital and biggest city is Agartala.

Tripura experiences a tropical climate. The best time to visit is during the cooler months, from October to Apri. The people here are still very much dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. Among the crops grown in Tripura include oilseed, pulses and potato. Its forests produce high-quality timber including sal, garjan and teak.

The Kingdom of Tripura has a history going back three thousand years. It was even mentioned in ancient manuscripts such as the Mahabharata. During ancient times it was known as Kirat Desh. The modern Kingdom of Tripura was established in the 19th century, when the capital shifted from Old Agartala to present Agartala, and the king modelled his administration according to British India.

After Tripura joined India in 1949, state administration was handled by neighbouring Assam until 1956, when Tripura was made a Union Territory without legislature. It attained statehood in 1972. The state was rocked by armed conflicts following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the state saw an influx of Bengalis from Bangladesh. Militant groups were formed to drive away the Bengalis. This insurgency problem is still a menace, so visitors are encouraged to check with the Indian consulate before making their trip.
