[an error occurred while processing this directive] Uttar Pradesh, whose name means Northern Province, is the most populous state in India as well as its fifth largest. The state of Uttar Pradesh follows the course of the Ganges River.

Uttar Pradesh shares an international border with Nepal. Surrounding Uttar Pradesh are the Indian states of Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. The administrative and legislative capital of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow while major cities in Uttar Pradesh include Noida, Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kanpur and Meerut.

Being along the Ganges, Uttar Pradesh has a long history that stretches back over 4000 years. It is believed that much of the history of Hinduism originated in or around Uttar Pradesh, and even today, many of the major Hindu pilgrimage sites are located here. Superimposed on Hinduism are also several major Buddhist sites in and around Uttar Pradesh, such as Sarnath near Varanasi, and Lumbini across the border in Nepal.

I passed through Uttar Pradesh by train, on my way to Varanasi with three other members of AsiaExplorers. Along the journey, I had the opportunity to capture some shots of daily life in this Indian state. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
