There are plenty of places to stay in India for all types of travelers. They range from well-known international hotel chains and converted palaces to budget hotels and hostels. As would be expected, the price range for accommodation in India is as wide as the the choices available.
While the five-star establishments may be too expensive for the average tourist, the medium-range hotels, many run by state tourism departments, certainly offer good value for money. If you are on a shoestring budget, you also have a wide range of budget accommodation to choose. In addition to the aforementioned hostels and guesthouses, you can even stay in ashrams.

Hotels in India are graded from one to five stars, although it is rare to find any accommodation provider publicizing its one-star status. Below three stars are the budget accommodation that do not usually publish a star rating.
At the most deluxe end of the accommodation spectrum are the five-star hotels run by international as well as local hotel chains. Among the brand names you will come across includes Oberoi, Taj, Hyatt Regency, Radisson and Shangri-La. These are the four and five star establishment. At three-star level are many of the state-run hotels.

Pricing
Many hotels have a dual tariff policy - one for foreigners and another for locals. The price usually does not include breakfast, unless mentioned. The tourist season starts in October, which is when hotels usually revise their rates.
Taxes are not included in the price, but the hotel bill will include taxes levied by the federal and state governments. The federal government applies a 10% hotel expenditure tax on room rental while the state government applies a luxury tax on room rental as well, varying between 5% to 25%. Some hotels also levy a service charge.
