Ehime Prefecture was created during the Meiji Restoration from the former Iyo Province. It faces the Inland Sea and is bordered by Kagawa Prefecture and Tokushima Prefecture to the east, and Kochi Prefecture to the south.
Traditionally a land of fishermen, Ehime Prefecture has since industrialized. Today its economy is supported by shipbuilding, oil refining, textile and petrochemicals. Agriculture and fishing still play an important role here. The local produce include citrus fruits such as the mikan (tangerine) and the iyokan, and cultured pearls.
