Higashi Hongan-ji Temple is one of the two Hongan-ji Temples of the Jodo-Shinshu sect in Kyoto. Its name means the "Eastern Temple of the Original Vow".

The layout of the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple is practically identical to the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple.

 One of the first sights at Higashi Hongan-ji Temple is its immense Goei-do gate. It is just a short distance from Kyoto Station.

The founder's hall of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple dates from 1895. It is claimed to be the largest wooden structure in the world.

Two blocks away from Higashi Hongan-ji is a spacious garden owned by the temple. It is called Shosei-an. The design of this garden is attributed to poet-scholar Ishikawa Jozan (1583-1672) and landscape architect Kobori Enshu (1579-1647). The garden is a green oasis in the city center where you can find herons, ducks and other wildlife.
