Hiroshima Prefecture (広島県) is a prefecture in the Chugoku region of Honshu Island in Japan. It covers 8,476.95 sq km and has a population of 2.9 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and biggest city is Hiroshima. The prefecture is bordered by Shimane Prefecture to the northwest, Tottori Prefecture to the north, Okayama Prefecture to the east and Yamagushi Prefecture to the southwest. It faces the Seto Inland Sea, with the island of Shikoku across from it.

Hiroshima Prefecture was created out of the former Bingo Province and Aki Province, when the provincial administrative division was replaced by the prefectural division in 1871. The area has been a center for trade and culture for hundreds of years.

The city of Hiroshima is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site to preserve remnants of the remains from the atomic bombing of 1945.

Visiting Hiroshima Prefecture

You can fly to Hiroshima Prefecture, landing at the Hiroshima Airport (HIJ), which receives domestic flights as well as international flights from Seoul, Bangkok and various cities of China.

The Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train stops at Hiroshima Station between Osaka and Fukuoka. The Nozomi trains from Tokyo takes 4 hours to reach Hiroshima. The fare is ¥18,500 one way.
