Itabashi ward is on the Kanto Plain. It is bordered by Saitama Prefecture to the north, Kita to the east, Toshima to the south and Nerima to the southwest. The Arakawa River forms the boundary between Itabashi and Saitama Prefecture. The name Itabashi means "plank bridge", in reference to such a bridge in the area during the Heian period.

Itabashi Ward was created in 1932 by merging nine towns and villages of Kita-Toshima District. It then became a special ward of Tokyo Metropolis in 1947. That same year, Nerima was split off to be a separate special ward.
