Iwatayama Monkey Park, Arashiyama, Kyoto

Iwatayama Monkey Park is a park in Arashiyama, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The park is on the slopes of Mount Arashiyama, on the Oi River side as the train station. It is home to some 150 to 170 wild Japanese macaques.
Although the monkeys are wild, they have become accustomed to seeing humans, and think nothing of receiving food from them. There are huts with wire-net windows from which you can buy food and feed the monkeys. The monkeys will reach in through the wire net to take the food from you.

The choice of food for the monkeys range from apples and banana slices, to biscuits, chestnuts and peanuts. Exercise some caution if you intend to feed the monkeys, as they may snatch the food and even scare small children.
Among the rules when visiting Iwatayama Monkey Park include never staring at the monkeys, as they consider this a sign of aggression. Do not touch the monkeys, as they may carry parasites. Finally, do not feed them from outside the hut.
