Kagawa Prefecture (香川県) Travel Guide

Kagawa Prefecture (香川県) is a prefecture of Japan on the island of Shikoku. Kagawa Prefecture has a population of roughly a million people (2011 estimate). Its capital is the city of Takamatsu.
Kagawa Prefecture is bordered by Tokushima Prefecture to the south and Ehime Prefecture to the west. It covers 1,861.7 sq km of the northeastern coast of the island facing the Seto Inland Sea, across which lies Okayama Prefecture in Honshu. In terms of size, it is the smallest prefecture in Japan.

Kagawa Prefecture was formerly known as Sanuki Province. It was created during the Meiji Restoration of 1871 which abolished changed the provincial administrative division (called the han system) of Japan to one based on prefectures.
