Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine, Kyoto
Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto. This is a place where you can see lots of students who come to pray for success in their examinations. The shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, a Heian period scholar-bureaucrat who in AD 986 was deified as Tenjin, the god of learning.
The grounds of Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine are planted with Michizane's favorite trees, the red and white plum blossom, which bloom in late February.

The Plum Blossom Festival is held here annually on 25 February, a tradition that has been repeated for nine hundred years since the death of Michizane. During the festival, there would be open-air tea ceremonies in the grounds hosted by geikos and maikos from neighboring Kamishichiken district. A flea market is also held at the grounds of Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine on 25th of every month.
