Kochi Prefecture (高知県) is a prefecture on the southern coast of Shikoku Island in Japan. It covers 7,104.87 sq km and has a population of 800,000 (2011 estimate). It is bordered by Ehime Prefecture to the west and Tokushima Prefecture to the northeast. The capital is Kochi City.
As Kochi Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean, away from the main populated areas of Shikoku, it is the least populous of the prefectures on the island. The prefecture is also mountainous, with only limited land for agriculture and development. The highest mountain in Kochi Prefecture is Inamura-yama, which is 1506 meters tall.
Visiting Kochi Prefecture
Coming from Honshu Island, the most popular way to reach Kochi is to take the train from Okayama, which reaches Kochi City in 2.5 hours. Alternatively you can fly from Osaka-Itami, Osaka-Kansai, Tokyo-Haneda and Nagoya-Komaki to the small Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ).
