Koto (江東区) is a special ward of Tokyo Metropolis. Located to the east of downtown Tokyo, Koto faces Tokyo Bay, and is bordered by Edogawa to the northeast, Sumida to the north and Chuo to the west. The Sumida River forms its boundary to the west.

Koto occupies 39.48 sq km (15.2 sq mi) and includes large area that were reclaimed from Tokyo Bay. This includes the Ariake waterfront area and the Odaiba man-made island. Koto was formerly part of Fukugawa Ward during the pre-war era. The ward was severely devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake and bombings from the Second World War. Koto Special Ward was created in 1947 when Tokyo Metropolis was established.

How to go to Koto

There are five subway lines into Koto, three by Tokyo Metro and two by Toei. On the Tokyo Metro network, the Tozai Line serves Monzen-nakacho (T-12), Kiba (T-13), Toyocho (T-14) and Minami-sunamachi (T-15) Subway Stations; the Yurakucho Line serves the Toyosu (Y-22), Tatsumi (Y-23) and Shin-kiba (Y-24) Subway Station; the Hanzomon Line serves the Sumiyoshi (Z-12) and Kiyosumi-shirakawa (Z-11) Subway Station. On the Toei network, the Shinjuku Line serves the Morishita (S-11), Sumiyoshi (S-13), Nishi-Ojima (S-14), Ojima (S-15), Higashi-Ojima (S-16) Subway Stations; and the Oedo Line serves the Morishita (E-13), Kiyosumi-shirakawa (E-14) and Monzen-nakacho (E-15) Subway Stations.

The main highway linking downtown Tokyo to Koto is the Shuto Expressway.

  7. Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome
    Botanical garden operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association with some 1000 species of tropical and semi-tropical plants.
