Meotoiwa Wedded Rocks are two rocks linked by a rope located in the sea off the coast in Futami, Mie Prefecture, Japan. The rope linking the two rocks is made of rice straw. The rocks are considered sacred places to Shintoism.
On the coast facing the Meotoiwa Wedded Rocks is the Futami Okitama Shrine, where Japanese pay their respect to the rocks. According to the Shinto religion, the two rocks represent a couple, with the larger rock being the male. It is topped with a small torii gate.
The straw rope linking the two rocks weigh over a ton. It has to be replaced several times a year, each time with a special ceremony. At times, Mount Fuji is visible in the distance.
