Miyagi Prefecture is located on the central part of the Tohoku region. It borders Iwate Prefecture to the north, Akita Prefecture to the northwest, Yamagata Prefecture to the west and Fukushima Prefecture to the south. Sendai Bay is a prominent feature of the prefecture. It has a broad central plain bordered to the west and northeast by mountain ranges, which form a natural barrier with neighboring prefectures. On the northern coast, the Oshika Peninsula protrudes into the Pacific Ocean.
