Nakano (中野区) is a special ward of Tokyo Metropolis, usually called Nakano City in English. It covers 15.59 sq km (6 sq mi) and has a population of 312,000 (2011 estimate). The ward is located to the west of downtown Tokyo.

Nakano is bordered by Nerima to the north, Shinjuku to the east, Shibuya to the south and Suginami to the west. Nakano touches Toshima over a short distance to the northeast. The towns of Nogata and Nakano were merged to form Nakano ward in 1932, as part of Tokyo City. Then in 1947 the American occupation reformed the administration, creating Tokyo Metropolis, and Nakano ward became Nakano special ward.

How to go to Nakano

Three subway lines serve the Nakano area, two by Tokyo Metro and one by Toei. On the Tokyo Metro network, the Marunouchi Line serves Shin-Nakano (M-05), Nakano-Sakaue (M-06) Subway Station while the Tozai Line serves the Nakano (T-01) and Ochiai (T-02) Subway Stations. On the Toei network, the Oedo Line serves the Nakano-Sakaue (E-30), Higashi Nakano (E-31) and Shin-egota (E-34) Subway Stations.

To reach Nakano by road, take National Routes 4, 5, 8, 14 and 25.
