Ohara District is a place to the north of Kyoto. It is a rural area where visitors can enjoy the sight of thatched farmhouses. Imbued with rustic charm, Ohara is also home to two famous temples.

 Sanzen-in Temple enjoys an incomparably beautiful setting. The approach to the temple is lined with shops selling local delicacies such as shiba-zuke, the local pickle. Its Amida Hall dates to AD 1148 and houses a statue of the meditating Amida Buddha.

On the other side of the valley is a nunnery called Jakko-in. It was here that Kenreimon-in, sole survivor of the Taira clan of samurai, prayed for the souls of her son and kin who were killed by the Genji clan.
