Shinbashi (新橋, map) is a neighbourhood in Minato, Tokyo. The name means "new bridge" although it is uncertained which particular bridge it refers to. It is sometimes spelled Shimbashi. The neighbourhood is bordered by Ginza to the south, Tsukiji to the west, Toranomon to the east and Hamamatsucho to the north. The neighbourhood of Shiodome is often regarded as being part of Shinbashi, or as being adjacent to it.

Shinbashi is today one of the business districts in Tokyo. You can find here high-rise office buildings houseing the headquarters of a number of Japanese companies including All Nippon Airways, Fujitsu, Shiseido, Softbank and Yakult, among others.

How to go to Shinbashi

There are two subway station in the neighbourhood, the Shimbashi Subway Station (Ginza Line (G-08), Asakusa Line (A-10)) and Shiodome Subway Station (Oedo Line (E-19)).

What to see in Shinbashi

  1. Shimbashi Station
This was the original terminus for the first railway in Japan, the Tokaido Main Line, and is therefore one of the oldest railway stations in the country. The original station building was built in 1872 and is located a little bit to the east of the present building, which opened in 1909 as Karasumori Station, and was renamed Shimbashi Station in 1914 when the original was demolished.

Japan's first subway line began serving the Shimbashi Station in 1934. It was operated by the Tokyo Underground Railroad Company, the precursor of today's Ginza Line. The Toei Asakusa Line began serving Shimbashi Station in 1968. The original Shimbashi Station was rebuilt in 2003 and today houses a railway museum.
