Shizuoka Prefecture (静岡県) is a prefecture of Japan in the Chubu Region. It covers an area of 7,779 sq km, ranking it 13th in size among the 47 prefectures of Japan. In terms of population, Shizuoka ranks 10th with 3.8 million people (2011 estimate). The prefectural capital is Shizuoka City.

Shizuoka Prefecture is renowned as one of the main regions for the growing of tea in Japan. The prefecture is long and narrow. It faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, Kanagawa Prefecture to the northeast, Yamanashi Prefecture to the north, Nagano Pre3fecture to the west and Aichi Prefecture to the southwest. Mount Fuji is located on the northern border of Shizuoka Prefecture with Yamanashi Prefecture.

Historically, Shizuoka Prefecture comprised Totomi Province, Suruga Province and Izu Province. The prefecture is prone to large earthquakes called the Tokai Earthquake, with the last one happening in 1854.

How to go to Shizuoka Prefecture

By Plane
The new Mount Fuji-Shizuoka Airport (FZI) which began operations in June, 2009,. is the new airport serving the prefecture. However flights are limited, and you can get better connections by landing at Chubu International Airport in Nagoya or Haneda Airport in Tokyo, then take a bus or train from there. The journey takes about 2 hours on the fastest train.

By Train
The Tokaido Shinkansen Hikari bullet train stops at Shizuoka train station. It is an hour from Tokyo and 50 minutes from Nagoya. The fare from either cities is ¥6180.
