Taito (台東区) is a special ward of Tokyo Metropolis. It is located to the immediate northeast of downtown Tokyo. It is one of the eight central wards of downtown Tokyo which includes Chiyoda, Minato, Shibuya, Chuo, Shinjuku, Toshima and Bunkyo. Covering an area of 10.08 sq km (3.9 sq mi), it is the smallest special ward of Tokyo, and has one of the smallest population of 170,000 (2011 estimate).

Taito is bordered by Arakawa to the north, Sumida to the east, Chuo to the south, Chiyoda to the southwest, Bunkyo to the west and Kita to the northwest. It was created in 1947 when Tokyo Metropolis was established.

How to go to Taito

The Ginza Line (serving Ueno-Hirokoji, Inaricho, Tawaramachi and Asakusa Subway Stations) and Hibiya Line (serving Okachimachi, Ueno, Iriya and Minowa Subway Stations) operated by Tokyo Metro as well as the Asakusa Line (serving Asakusa-bashi, Kuramae and Asakusa Subway Stations) and Oedo Line (serving Ueno-Okachimachi, Shin-Okachimachi and Kuramae Subway Stations) operated Toei are the subway lines serving Taito, in addition to numerous regular train lines by JR East, Keisei Electric Railway, Tobu Railway and Tsukuba Express.

To reach Taito by road, take Shuto Expressway and National Highway Routes 4 and 6.

  1. Akihabara
    Major shopping area of downtown Tokyo specializing in electronics, computer, anime and otaku goods.

  2. Asakusa
    Site of Sensoji, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.

  3. Asakusabashi
    District famous for stores selling traditional Japanese dolls.

  4. Ueno
    District best known for Ueno Park and Ueno Station.

What to see in Taito

  1. Asakusa Shrine
    One of the most famous Shinto shrines in Tokyo.

  2. Kan'ei-ji Temple
    Tendai Buddhist temple named after the Kan'ei era when it was built, this is a funerary temple linked to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate.

  3. Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Garden
    Garden on the former estate of the Iwasaki family, which founded Mitsubishi.

  4. National Museum of Western Art
    The premier public art gallery showcasing art from the Western tradition.

  5. National Museum of Nature and Science
    Museum established in 1871 showcasing a variety of natural history and interactive exhibits.

  6. Sensoji Temple
    The oldest temple in Tokyo dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.

  7. Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
    Art museum in Ueno Park.

  8. Tokyo National Museum
    Established in 1872, this is the oldest and largest museum in Japan housing over 110,000 objects including 87 Japanese National Treasures and 610 Important Cultural Properties.

  9. Ueno Park
    Major public park particularly famous for cherry blossom viewing.

  10. Ueno Zoo
    The oldest zoo in Japan, established in 1882, occupying a 14.3 hectare site.
