Toyama Prefecture (富山県) is a prefecture of Japan within the Chubu region of Honshu Island. It is within the Hokuriku sub-region of Chubu, which includes Ishikawa Prefecture, Fukui Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture. Toyama Prefecture is 4,247 sq km and ranks 33rd out of the 47 prefectures of Japan in terms of size. It has a population of 1.1 million (2011 estimate), placing it in 38th position. The prefectural capital is Toyama City.

Toyama Prefecture faces Toyama Bay to the north, Niigata Prefecture to the northeast, Nagano Prefecture to the east, Gifu Prefecture to the south and Ishikawa Prefecture to the west. Toyama Prefecture is one of the most industrialized prefectures on the west coast of Japan. Among the items it produces include pharmaceutical products, machinery, industrial robots, electronic parts and metal products. It is also a major producer of high-quality rice.

Going to Toyama Prefecture

By Plane
You can take a flight to Toyama City which receives international flights from Shanghai, Seoul and Dalian. There are buses from Toyama Airport (TOY) to the city center. It takes 25 minutes and costs ¥400.

By Train
Take the Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train to Echigo-Yuzawa and then change trains to the Hakutaka limited express train to reach Toyama. The ride costs ¥11,900 one way and takes three and a half hours. If you hold the Japan Rail Pass, you only need to pay ¥1450 for the portion between Echigo-Yuzawa and Naoetsu, which is operated by the Hokuetsu Railway.
