Ueno (上野, map) is a district in Taito, Tokyo, best known as the site of Ueno Park. Formerly a working class neighbourhood, Ueno is today a major transportation hub. It is home to Ueno Station, a major commuter hub for long distance trains to northern Japan. The district however has one of the largest population of homelss people in Tokyo, revealing a shocking truth that poverty exists in this otherwise affluent metropolis.

How to go to Ueno

Take the Ginza Line (G-15) or Hibiya Line (H-17) to the Ueno Subway Station or the Oedo Line (E-09) to the Ueno-Okachimachi Subway Station.

What to see in Ueno

  1. Bentendo Temple
    Buddhist temple dedicated to Benten, the goddess of wealth.

  2. Kan'ei-ji Temple
    Tendai Buddhist temple named after the Kan'ei era when it was built, this is a funerary temple linked to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate.

  3. National Museum of Western Art
    The premier public art gallery showcasing art from the Western tradition.

  4. National Museum of Nature and Science
    Formerly called the National Science Museum, this institution was established in 1871 showcasing a variety of natural history and interactive exhibits.

  5. Toshogu
    Shinto shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined.

  6. Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
    Art museum in Ueno Park.

  7. Tokyo National Museum
    Established in 1872, this is the oldest and largest museum in Japan housing over 110,000 objects including 87 Japanese National Treasures and 610 Important Cultural Properties.

  8. Ueno Park
    Major public park particularly famous for cherry blossom viewing.

  9. Ueno Zoo
    The oldest zoo in Japan, established in 1882, occupying a 14.3 hectare site.
